Top Tea Rooms - USA

Where to take tea? That is the question. Small towns are sprouting tiny tea rooms; big cities claim dozens, both English- and Asian-style. What to do? Try them all!

Top Tea Rooms in the USA

Alice's Tea Cup - 102 West 73rd St, New York City; 212-799-300. The best recommendation I can give for Alice's is that THIS is the place the locals return to over and over again. Whenever you talk to an Upper Westsider and mention Alice's, they immediately launch into a discussion about which scone is their favorite (pumpkin, coconut almond...)

The Rotunda Tea at The Pierre - 2 East 61st St/Fifth Ave, New York City; 212-838-8000
Traditional tea every afternoon in a very traditional and beautiful hotel

Astor Court at the St. Regis - 2 East 55th Street at Madison Avenue; 212-753-4500. Feast your eyes on the trompe l'oeil ceiling and enjoy the strivings of the harpist at tea time. As you lounge in overstuffed chairs, indulge in fresh scones and tiny sandwiches, like the ones with goat cheese and sun-dried tomatoes. There are also tartletttes and cakes, and the tea is regularly replenished. A luxurious ambiance for afternoon tea.

Biddie's - 76 South High St, Dublin, Ohio; 614-764-9359. Reservations required. Biddie's Coach House is the premiere tea room in the Olde Dublin (Ohio) Historical District. Victorian Tea every Wednesday and Saturday displays the team room adorned with tiers of traditional tea offerings.

Lady Effie's Tea Parlor - 453 East Adams Boulevard, Los Angeles; 213-749-2204
Afternoon tea served Tuesday through Sunday, 12noon to 4pm, in a restored Victorian home. Reservations required. Private parties.

Lovejoy's Tea Room - 1351 Church St, San Francisco; 415-648-5895. A quirk, cozy tea room filled with asorted electic collectibles.

Samovar Tea Lounge - 498 Sanchez St, San Francisco; 415-626-4700. Sexy, mystical asian tea room. Good selection of teas, including many pu-erhs, and tisanes.

Secret Garden Tea House - 721 Lincoln Way, San Francisco; 415-566-8834

The Drake Hotel - 140 East Walton Place, Chicago; 312-787-2200. Afternoon tea served at the Palm Court daily, 1.30 to 5pm.

Marshall Field's - 111 N. State St, Chicago; 312-781-1000. Traditional English style, afternoon tea. The Walnut Room, on the 7th floor of Marshall Fields on State Street, is one of the oldest restaurants in Chicago, dating from 1907. Teas are brewed loose, from Whittard's Teas.

Willard Intercontinental, Washington (Downtown near The White House)
1401 Pennsylvania Avenue; 202-637-7440
Victorian style hotel tea room in an historic or landmark building. Afternoon tea, Royal tea, dessert tea. Tea served in Peacock Alley. Reservations accepted.
